I have never really been a fan of the Christmas jumper trend. I know it seems like I don’t have a sense of humour, but I can assure you that I do; it just doesn’t extend to wearing a novelty Christmas sweater. So, when Laurie from VanityandMe decided that this was to be our next ‘5-over-50’ style challenge, I certainly did not jump for joy or go Ho Ho Ho. It was more like Oh God No!
How was I going to find something that I would actually wear? This was a style challenge to beat all. I decided to go for the more traditional Christmas sweater, not the funny slogan novelty type. So, the vibe is more Swiss chalet skiing holiday (I wish), drinking hot chocolate or gluhwein than the twelve pubs of Christmas.
Then my little darling grandson dropped in to visit and guess what… he was wearing his Christmas sweater too and so it was the perfect photo opportunity. In fact, it made the entire Christmas jumper/sweater challenge much more fun. But of course, a 15 month-old little boy will not pose on demand, so the pics were taken very quickly and then it was story time.
I bought my jumper in Marks and Spencer for €47.50 and will be wearing it again over the winter and if anyone takes me on a skiing holiday, I will be perfectly attired for the apres-ski!
Now look how my friends styled theirs.
Jacqui from Mummabstylish goes all sparkly in a lovely gold knit. I think we can all see where she is!
And Laurie from VanityandMe goes for a statement piece of jewellery and a striking midi-skirt with her red Christmas jumper.
The two of them went for the more understated jumper, keeping within the parameters of the Christmas theme with sparkles and the colour red. My other two friends (below) did the Christmas jumper, but in a sophisticated fashion.
Anna from annasislandstyle went for a proper Christmas jumper with a slogan, but look at how differently she styled it. I love the colourful circular skirt and sparkly boots.
And Gail from thisismutton also opts for a discreet Christmas-themed jumper, embellished with golden antlers and a red nose. Gail goes all out and puts hers with a very Christmassy plaid skirt. Love it.
And this is also Gail’s last challenge with us as she is taking a break from blogging for a while. We will miss her.
Click on their names above to bring you to their posts and learn more about their take on the style challenge and where they sourced their outfits. Do you wear Christmas jumpers or do you consider them to be naff? I would love to know.
Thanks for reading and Happy Christmas to you all!
Fabulous post Hilda, not being fans of Xmas jumper we both tackled the challenge well! Looking forward to next months now, once the festivities are over. x Jacqui

Yes it is good to get us outside our comfort zone. Happy Christmas to you xxx
I love your sweaters! And of course your little grandson-so cute!
Nina thank you sweetheart….Happy Christmas x
Thanks Nina. xx
We have the same taste in aprés ski jumpers. I think I will be bold and knit one for myself.
I wish I had your talent Diane…thank you so much for commenting xx
I wish I could knit.
I would have that same response. I think it’s because I wore the ugly Christmas sweaters when I was young, and now they give me the heeby geebies—LOL!
But the one you’re wearing is incredible Hilda!! I’d totally wear that–even though I don’t ski, ha ha!!
And thanks for including your grandson–what a sweetie!!!
XOXO

Ah Jodie thank you. I am totally besotted and was lucky he turned up, otherwise my pics were boring. Serendipity!!
I love your apres ski jumper Hilda, it’s so stylish and cosy looking. Your photos really capture what Christmas is all about! Have a good one.
Ah thanks Gail… hope you have a lovely break, you must be tired with all the travelling overseas. x
All lovely, ladies. We know mine is also subdued like yours Hilda , and penguin orientated being related to hens in that they are avian. Anyway I do also have a gold glitter jumper that I see as festive and seasonal rather than Xmas.

I also have a gold glitter, but it is old. It was a difficult challenge for me, but I got through it..I don’t think I thought outside the box though..
I think the cute factor of your grandson wins this challenge hands down Hilda. I’ve only recently jumped on the Christmas jumper bandwagon and that’s because we have a charity event on the island to fundraise on our Christmas Jumper Day. It’s been another great challenge don’t you think?
Wishing you and your family a wonderful Christmas!

I loved seeing these photos, Hilda. I think they are the most Christmassy. I wish you a fabulous Christmas Hilda xx
Ah thanks Laurie..looks like I needed him otherwise mine would have been very boring in comparison to all of you!
There’s nothing wrong with a classic cozy fair aisle sweater for the holidays! You look marvelous, Hilda. And how adorable is your grandson in his winter sweater! I wish you a very Merry Christmas!
