The straw hat is right on trend this season, but it never really goes out of fashion, being a staple item of the sun holiday wardrobe. Icons like Brigitte Bardot and Bianca Jagger made them fashionable back in the ’60s and recently they have been popular at weddings and the races also.
I use a big hat to hide from the sun (when we get the sun in Ireland) whether that is in my back garden or at a BBQ, and it is definitely a must-have on a foreign sun holiday. But a hat must be comfortable also and I have written before about how I find it difficult to find a hat that fits my head.
Last year, I had the opportunity to wear a fabulous hat from Anthony Peto to The Dublin Horse Show, which was both comfortable and functional. Check out the post HERE.
Recently, I wore a hat from Marc Cain with one of their very wearable animal-print shift dresses in a charity fashion show at Malahide Golf Club. They kindly loaned it to me to take some photos for this post. I am thinking of going back to purchase it as they have 30% off in their sale, which brings it down to about €60.
On a sun holiday you will always find me sitting under a big hat trying to protect my face from the sun and so guard against melanoma and nasty stuff like that. Though this is not a big hat, I think it would offer enough protection.
The dress is incredibly comfortable and easy to wear and with 30% off is now about €200. The bag is borrowed from the stylist daughter.
I generally wear a hat when golfing too, (woolly in the winter and peaked in the summer) though not making any fashion statement while doing so. So I was surprised when I had to get a suspicious mark treated recently. More on that in a future post!
Check out my friends hats here. Some interesting posts, including the history of fascinators. Have a look.

Do you like hats or are you more of a fascinator type of person? Personally, I am not a fan of the latter. But I am willing to concede that they do not flatten the hair and suit some people more than others. And they can certainly make a statement! Share your feelings, don’t hold back!!
Love the hat and the dress.
I too wear a hat outside most of the time. As you know, we live in sun country and too much on my face is not good! I need to get one more like the one you are wearing, as my big floppy straw hat is just too much unless I’m on the beach.
Looking fabulous as always Hilda!
Thanks Loretta… you are a sweetie..keep protecting the face..
What a great hat! It really suits you. I love your dress too, the animal print is fab!

I’ve only recently become a hat person—they hide a multitude of sins, and keep the sun off my face. What more could you ask for??
You look so lovely Hilda!!!

I know this is about the hat , but I absolute love your dress! You should have participated in our series lady month with this dress! Stunning!
Nancy thank you.. I will get my act together re link ups etc…eventually. So slow learning all the stuff…very untechnical.x
Hilda,
You look wonderful in your hat!
Love the dress too!
Yes, I am wearing summer hats more to protect my face from any more sun damage.
Have a wonderful weekend my friend! I off to play some golf before it rains again!

Thanks Robin…enjoy your golf x
That hat and dress is simply sensational on you Hilda! As for hats and fascinators, I like hats but somehow not for weddings. They instantly date the wearer and make the outfit look a bit twee. Not keen on fascinators either. Well, you did say don’t hold back!
I know where you are coming from…not sure if I am going to wear a hat at my daughter’s wedding….Thanks Gail x
Hilda,
You wear fancy hats and casual hats so well! How fun that you can borrow from you daughter!
Julie
Thanks Julie…hats, jewellery and scarves that is all I fit into….LOL.
Oh, how lovely your dress and hat is! I’m needing a hat in my life – mainly for my holidays. Thanks for sharing this post Hilda. Jacqui Mummabstylish
It is a must Jacqui…
I love hats, wide brimmed in particular. I’ve been collecting them this past few years but only seem to wear get wear out of them on sun holidays, I wear them rather than pack them, sometimes wearing one on top of the other boarding planes. I love how they make me feel protected from the sun and give a feminine look to outfits. I don’t like facinators, and am glad to see less of them at weddings this year. Hope we get loads of sun this summer so we can sport our straw hats.
Hi Bernadette, thank you for commenting. You and I share the same feelings about fascinators. x
I’m loving straw hats this year. Love your choice and your dress is gorgeous Hilda! xx
Thank you Maria.. at least we have the weather to wear them.
