Currently in bed with a horrific sinus infection, I am going to binge watch some Netflix series, as soon as I am well enough, so if you have any recommendations, I would be delighted to hear them. Meanwhile, here are three that I have really enjoyed, so I hope you enjoy them too.
‘The Sinner’
This American crime/drama/mystery series based on a novel by Petra Hammesfahr will grip you from the very beginning. All is not what it seems and the main character Cora (Jessica Biel) seems unhappy and discontented, disconnected from her husband and even her son, though she obviously loves him.
When she kills a man on a beach in an unprovoked attack, it sets into motion a chain of events that causes her to delve into her past.
With the help of the detective involved in her case, her suppressed memories start to gradually return and the truth is revealed. The detective, Ambrose (Bill Pullman) has his own problems and maybe that is why he is drawn to the troubled Cora and becomes involved in trying to help her discover why she killed the man.
You will want to binge watch this one!
And Season 2 will be available to watch on Netflix this side of the pond on November 8th. My friends in the USA tell me it is even better than the first. Can’t wait.
‘The Blacklist’
An American crime series, I love the main character, an ex-government agent Raymond ‘Red’ Reddington (played by James Spader), who has become a high-profile and very rich criminal but who voluntarily surrenders to the FBI after eluding capture for years. In return for immunity from prosecution, he provides a list of the most dangerous criminals in the world he has crossed swords with and helps the FBI in either eliminating them or bringing them to justice.
He insists on working exclusively with an FBI profiler Elizabeth Keen (who we discover as the series progresses is his daughter) and each self-contained dramatic episode, often with considerable violence, unearths a little more about Reddington and his murky past.
Series 6 is due for release early next year but the first five are definitely worth watching beforehand.
‘Designated Survivor’
Until I watched this series, I had never heard of the term Designated Survivor. The concept of the designated survivor is that one member of the US President’s staff sits out of the State of the Union address in case the rest of the government is blown to bits.
This unlikely event occurs and Tom Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland), an academic with little political experience but Secretary of State for Housing and Urban Development, finds himself as leader of the free world in a time when the country is in total chaos.
Following two successful series, ABC decided to pull out because of production costs, but Netflix came to the rescue with season 3 coming to the screens in 2019 and series 1 and 2 being broadcast on Netflix in the next few months.
So pour yourself a glass of your favourite tipple and enjoy.
