Mustard is one of those colours that you either love or hate and those friends whom I asked are mostly haters.
As for me, I am not even sure why I chose it, as mustard is not a colour that I find particularly easy to wear. However, I do enjoy a challenge. Our last theme of ‘Frill Seekers’ also tested my creative skills.
When we think of mustard, I suppose we automatically think of the iconic Colman’s, but as with every colour, there are so many different shades that I was determined to find one to suit me. Below are the mustards I have in my kitchen cupboard!
First of all, do you know the origin of the term ‘keen as mustard’?
Mustard has long been a popular condiment to accompany roast beef, and was mentioned as far back as 1390 in a book called ‘The Forme of Cury’. The chefs of King Richard II made a type of mustard seed ball to spice up the Sunday roast!
Soon the term ‘keen as mustard’ was used to suggest vigour, zest or enthusiasm. If you were ‘keen as mustard’, you were seen as having energy. Go taste some mustard and see how it can clear your sinuses and wake you up!
We saw the colour appear on the catwalks and on the high street last summer and it has not gone away for autumn/winter.

The sharp, tangy and piquant mustard will add some sass to your look. You might only want to add a scarf to brighten up a winter day, or maybe you will go for a soft and cosy top or sweater. I got my fabulous scarf in Penneys/Primark. And I used a lovely antique pin, given to me by my lovely GG for our first wedding anniversary, to keep it in place. I went for a walk last Saturday in that exact outfit and I was as warm as toast.
My grey jeans are Zara and my boots are last year’s purchase from a wonderful boutique in Malahide called Paula’s. The jumper is a recent purchase from Penneys/Primark and my faux-fur gilet from French Connection is several years old, but getting lots of outings this year. The bag is New Look and the leather gloves are ancient and from M&S.
I had my Anthony Peto hat on when we were walking around the village, but left it off for our wander around Malahide Castle.
There are many shades of mustard and you are bound to find a shade that suits you. And if you are scared of it, you can always wear it in an accessory like a bag or a pair of shoes.

Look at Anna who really embraced the theme by mixing her patterns and tying it all together with her mustard bag. Anna is a lover of colour and mustard too obviously and is never afraid to add her own quirky touch to her outfits. Check her out at annasislandstyle
Emma always looks so chic and she chose to add mustard to her outfit with a jumper and a cute pair of shoes. Love the mustard/yellow flowers on the tree behind. If you want more sass head over to thestylesplash.
And Jacqui has paired her fabulous mustard trousers with an animal print top. It looks like it is a lovely sunny day wherever she is. If you want to know where she got them head to mummabstylish
Are you keen on mustard or is it a little too spicy for your taste?
I embraced the new mustard colour this year. I did intend to buy more but haven’t yet. Where did that year go? All of you are looking fabulous as usual xx
I never likes the color much. But in the past months I have seen it styled so beautifuly, like you all did here, that the color really is starting to grow on me! It s actually a very warm rich color! Hats look so fabulous on you!
You are so sweet Nancy xx
That scarf is gorgeous Hilda, it looks so snuggly and warm. I love your hat, and seeing your bag has reminded me that I have a similar one stashed away in the wardrobe…time to give it an airing!

That scarf of yours is epic Hilda! I totally love that a scarf can be such a statement piece. And those boots – I’ve been longing to buy some OTK boots for years and there you are looking ultra sleek in yours. Another fab challenge and one that I thoroughly enjoyed too.

Great looks! (Especially that cozy scarf.) I LOVE mustard, but it doesn’t love me… But I have an ancient mustard Boden bag that I break out when I need some spicy!
Thanks Liz. I agree it is difficult to find the right shade, I persevered though…
