I recently visited Nicola O’Byrne at The Skin Nurse Clinic for a Scarlet RF Treatment.
Nicola is passionate about the work she does and has worked within Dermatology medical clinics since 2001, latterly at The Beacon.
A founding member and former chairperson of DANAI (Dermatology Aesthetics Nurses Association Ireland – www.danai.ie ) she acts as a representative to develop standards with the National Standards Authority Ireland (NSAI) to help regulate the area of non-surgical aesthetics. As a Registered Nurse Prescriber (NP), she can use medical strength products for more effective results.
Nicola aims to provide cutting-edge solutions to resolve problem skin conditions, including rosacea, acne, scarring and general skin improvement. The clinic offers anything from fillers to thread lifting and everything in between. You can check it all out at www.theskinnurse.ie.
SO WHAT DID I HAVE?
I had a SCARLET TREATMENT.
FDA approved, Scarlet RF is a revolutionary short-pulse radiofrequency (RF) with micro-needling skin treatment. I had Microneedling several years ago and liked it. This is like a double-whammy. It aims to increase the density of the skin to improve firmness, and decrease sagging and the appearance of ageing. The increased energy beneath the superficial layer of skin stimulates the production of collagen to repair and tighten the skin. Sound good so far?
It promises noticeable results in a month, with minimal discomfort and little or no downtime.
Approximately 4 treatments are needed initially and two-a-year for maintenance.
WHAT CAN SCARLET DO?
- Treats active acne and acne scars
- Rebuilds lost collagen
- Improves rosacea
- Lifts, firms and tightens the skin
- Shrinks pores
- Reduces the appearance of spider veins
- Treats sun-damaged skin and scars
- Softens fine lines
- Unifies skin tone by reducing hyper-pigmentation
WHAT TO EXPECT
When I arrived, I was shown into one of the treatment rooms (below), filled in a questionnaire and was assessed. Nicola told me what to expect from the treatment. She applied a topical anaesthesia, assuring me that it was strong and the treatment would not be overly painful.
When that had taken effect, my skin was prepped and I sat back ready to go. Nicola began, checking in with me to ensure I was comfortable at every step. The actual treatment took about twenty minutes. There are videos on my Facebook page and Instagram stories, so you can check it out. Or pop over to the Instagram @theskinnurseclinic.
WAS IT PAINFUL?
No, and Nicola said I was able to take it at a high level. The level of intensity can be raised or lowered depending on the area being treated or your own pain threshold.

STRAIGHT AFTERWARDS
I experienced some redness but ir was not sore. By the time I was going to bed that night it was practically gone. I felt there was some reduction of wrinkles immediately. See the photo below.
Next day, about 22 hours later, I attended a Charity Lunch in The Westbury and all redness had disappeared.
RESULTS
Results are not immediate, though I noticed some tightening around the jaw area/lower face. Yippee! Some people see good results from a single treatment that last six months to a year.
Of course, a series of treatments is recommended to achieve the optimum result.
The Skin Nurse Clinic is situated at 383 Gresham House on the Clontarf Road…and there is car parking at the rear of the building.
I love reading about real life experiences of these treatments. I’m very tempted by RF treatments and lasers. You looked fabulous at your Westbury lunch.
Thanks Gail. Yes I definitely see some tightening. Now I need to keep doing it…
This really sounds great! I’ve done a few treatments like this years ago but know I’m inspired to get back to my dermatologist,
Nancy it is all about maintenance isn’t it? Got to keep doing it…
Great information! Your skin already look amazing! I’ll be watching to see how it looks after the next procedure.
Yes I need to keep it up….
