Finn Lough is a luxury, magical hideaway on Lower Lough Erne in County Fermanagh, half an hour’s drive beyond Enniskillen. And if there is a more relaxing place on earth, I have not found it, yet. From the moment you arrive in Finn Lough, you feel you are in another world. Firstly, the welcome is warm and genuine. A glass of prosecco to celebrate our arrival was gratefully received. And then we were whisked off to our accommodation in a golf buggy.
ACCOMMODATION
We stayed in a Bubble Dome (below) and do not worry no-one can see in. It is completely private.
But there is also the option of a Lakeside Villa sleeping 6.
It would be perfect for a grown-up family (only over-16s) or a group of friends. And there are a few suites in Finn Lough House too. But, I am going to concentrate on the magical Bubble where we stayed.
BUBBLE
What can I say about the BUBBLE? We absolutely loved it. There is a definite connection with nature. We lay on the bed watching the autumn leaves fall around us and listening to the odd plop as one landed just above us.
The night we were there it was raining cats and dogs, so no star gazing. But we fell asleep to the sound of rain pounding on our bubble and did not wake until 9 hours later. That is unheard of in our house! We presume it was the combination of the most relaxing afternoon at the Elements Trail that afternoon (read more below), the comfy bed and the hypnotic sound of the rain. We awoke to the sound of a solitary bird trilling above us. Beautiful.
The bed is one of the most comfortable we have ever slept in and even the pillows were perfect.
We are very fussy about our pillows and often travel with them, in Ireland.
WHAT YOU HAVE IN THE BUBBLE
Each bubble has a Nespresso machine and home-made cookies greeted us on our arrival. The fridge had a small bottle of prosecco, some water, beers, crisps and popcorn, all complimentary.
Our bubble had a bath and a shower and, of course, I had to have a bubble bath in the bubble. It would have been rude not to!
Beautiful robes and slippers were also provided and the most heavenly luxurious toiletries from The Handmade Soap Company.
FOOD
Dinner that evening in The Barn Restaurant was exceptional. The stylish and spacious restaurant is tucked away in the woodland. Though the space is large, the atmosphere is intimate. Small plates of mouthwatering dishes with unusual combinations, beautifully presented, are the norm here.
Locally sourced ingredients, vegetables from their polytunnels, foraging and obviously a very adventurous, talented chef made the entire experience a culinary delight. And yes, we had plenty to eat. I know some people are wary of small plates, but I can assure you that you will not go away hungry.
The serving staff could not have been more helpful and explained every element of the dishes.
ACTIVITIES
You can be as active or as chilled as you want. There are canoes to use if you fancy a paddle on the lake. Instead, we tried out the complimentary bikes on the lakeshore trail. And, of course, you can walk. Or if you fancy board games there are plenty of those too.
If you are there at the weekend, there is guided yoga in the big bubble space down by the lake. I would have loved that.
THE ELEMENTS TRAIL
Oh my goodness, how we loved every element. This is a two-hour self-guided experience, starting with a 20-minute flotation bath. Just heaven, we lay there, not even talking to each other until the little tinkle of a bell told us our time was up.
We flowed through a series of treatment cabins nestled in the forest, combining hot and cold therapy.
Yes, I took a quick dip. You can see that I really did on my Instagram stories or Highlights of Finn Lough.
Below I am enjoying a cup of mint tea in the relaxation room at the end.
STAFF
People can make or break a holiday. The staff at Finn Lough are exceptional and added hugely to our experience, from the welcome we got from James at reception to the lovely Niamh at The Elements Trail, Ronaldo at the bar and Rachel and David in The Barn Restaurant.
The welcome prosecco was very pleasant. Below you can see me enjoying mine, wearing a Mint Velvet jumper, F&F at Tesco jeggings and Clarks boots.
I can imagine that the vibe changes as the seasons change. We were cosied up, the fire in the House was blazing as we had seasonal coffees.
I don’t often want to return to places I visit, but Lough Finn IS NOT ONE OF THOSE. We intend to return in another season as the vibe will be different.
TIPS
Check in is at 3 o’clock, but that does not mean that you cannot arrive earlier. Take a lakeside walk or cycle. Or you can just relax in Finn Lough House and have lunch or a coffee in any one of their little nooks and crannies. Graham is very good at relaxing and always managed to find a comfortable chair.
Finn Lough is very much a place to relax and forget about dressing up. So think of casual clothes and depending on the time of the year bring rainwear. Actually, bring rainwear anyway.
FINALLY….
It is very easy to imagine that you are the only people here and this is your own private hideaway.
Finn Lough is a luxury experience, a very special, unique destination. And I have been given a discount for you to use. See below. What a wonderful Christmas gift for a loved one…. a night beneath the stars or even the rain. Either way, you will not be disappointed.
Thank you for reading as always.
