Wearing gingham is not square, I swear. In fact, if you do you are right on trend. This month’s challenge for our ‘Style Not Age’ group was my choice and because I was busy helping out with my daughter’s wedding, I decided on gingham and thought I was very witty with the title.
Many of you probably associate gingham with tablecloths and kitchen curtains, or maybe you immediately think of Dorothy in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ in her iconic blue gingham dress. Or maybe some of you remember the legendary Brigitte Bardot chose to marry Jacques Charrier in 1959 in a pink gingham dress.
Well, gingham has been making a statement on the runways in the past few seasons and, of course, the High Street followed suit with plenty of skirts, dresses, shirts and trousers.
You can’t deny that it is eye-catching and I love the vintage feeling to the check pattern.
GG asked me why it was called gingham and to be honest I had to ASK GOOGLE. What is the difference between plaid, gingham and check anyway? It is too complicated to explain so click on this link.
I am not exactly sure if my trousers are gingham, now. The fabric might be too heavy, maybe they are plain check. But they sure as hell are comfortable and I think stylish. They are from the Spanish ‘Punto Roma’ label, stocked exclusively by Shaws Department Stores in Ireland.
Below, I teamed them with a Zara shirt, a bargain in the sale for less than €20. My wedges are last year’s from Paula’s in Malahide. And can you get a glimpse of those earrings from Penneys/Primark, a bargain at €4.
I think they look equally good with with my shirt from The Bias Cut and blue mules from Clarks (a sale purchase).
Oh and I also bought those earrings in peach. Why not?
How did my friends interpret the challenge?
Do they know their gingham from their plaids and checks?
Of course they do. Anna from Anna’s Island Style as always, wows with her vintage finds. Don’t you just love her styling? There is nothing of a wallflower about Anna so hop over to her post to learn more.
Jacqui is singing in the rain or is that disbelief on her face at those raindrops. Check her details and see where she got those cute gingham trousers at mummabstylish
Emma is channelling Brigitte Bardot in her colourful pink skirt. I love how she toughens up the look with her tee-shirt. Learn more by clicking on StyleSplash
Have you tried gingham yet?

Lovely post, great read as you always give us Hilda. Thanks for the challenge. x Jacqui Mummabstylish
Jacqui you are a sweetie. I love our challenges.
I’d say they were gingham – and very nice too. I wish I’d got some gingham crops this year but didn’t see any I liked. The half tuck works on you Hilda – you’re one of the few! And love those mules.
The mules were only €23 and are very comfy. Thanks Gail…go have a look in the end of the sales. Now that the weather changed I have been wearing them a lot.
I love that you all mixed prints with your checks and gingham! And I would call your pants gingham, but I am going to go read how to tell the difference now! Perhaps we all are wrong. In any event, your styling is so great! I love both looks. And gingham is totally my jam!

Ah thanks for commenting Jess. I have seen you in gingham and you look great…The shoes are really comfy.
Thank you Jess…xx
I’m glad it’s not just me that gets confused with gingham and check! I’ll have to ask Google what the difference is! You’ve managed the half tucked shirt to perfection – I just can’t master it. I love both outfits, the gingham trousers are very stylish and versatile.

Thanks Emma. I have only recently mastered the half tuck. It did take a while…better with softer materials like this.
Thanks for throwing down the gauntlet with this charming challenge Hilda. I don’t have many gingham pieces so this really tested my styling abilities. I used to have trousers just like yours which makes me question where on earth have mine gone – have I rashly thrown them out in one of my dejunking phases? Anyway, you’re looking classy as ever my dear and not at all frazzled after all of the wedding shenanigans that must have taken place of late!
Have a lovely week!

You are so sweet Emma..not frazzled but a little tired. Grandson is staying while the newly weds are on honeymoon so great fun all around.
Totally cute both ways, Hilda!!

Thanks Nancy. I had fun researching all about gingham, but there was too much to put up on the post.
I have some similar pants and will be looking for new ways to wear them! Love your blue mules!
Thank you so much Suzanne…they are my favourites at the moment.
I do believe you were wearing those very hip gingham trousers when I met you, Hilda! I noticed them right away and loved how stylish you looked in them. Bravo!
Thanks Loretta…yes you are right…xx
