I have only one item with sequins in my wardrobe, a top I bought in Oasis years ago but have never worn. I love sequins on others; they are sparkly, they shine and catch the light, so why don’t I wear them?
I consider myself a sparkly fun-loving person, so surely it should be reflected in my clothing!
So, when Emma suggested sequins for our December challenge, I said, ’I can do this; I am going to conquer my sequin phobia.’
History of Sequins
The word sequin comes from the Arabic word for coin ‘sikka’. When Tutunkhamen’s tomb was discovered in 1922, his clothes were covered in gold sequin-like discs, which were actually real gold. He wanted his wealth with him when he went to the next world and it was thought that the gold would also ward off evil spirits.
Sequins were seen decorating the dresses of Victorian women and also made a resurgence in the 1920s in the flapper era. Of course, pop stars like Michael Jackson, Elton John, Madonna and Kylie used sequins on their stage costumes, but we were a little slower to embrace the full-on sequin phenomenon.
Sequins were mainly only seen around Christmas and the New Year because we felt something sparkly was required for the festive season, but in the last few years sequins have been everywhere and the brave and fashion forward are not afraid to shine all year around!
Emma
Emma is not afraid of sequins and has gone all-out with a very cute silver-sequinned jacket and silver boots. Are they sequinned too? You will have to head over to her Style Splash blog to find out.
Anna
What is lovely about sequins is how they reflect the light and look at how Anna’s top glitters in the sunlight. She probably bought it for a song in a charity shop! Check out her post on Anna’s Island Style and see.
Jacqui
I love the different colours in Jacqui’s top. She sparkles in blues, greens and silver, also reflected in her lovely earrings. Now where did she get that top? Check out Mummabstylish.
Hilda
I was in ‘Vanity Fair’ in Newbridge and just happened to find a sequinned dress which I had to try on. I had intended to use my old top, but I could not resist this, so I had to get GG to take a photograph and then I had to feature it. I love the asymmetrical hem and the fact that it is so comfortable to wear. We paired it with surprisingly comfortable shoes from the brand Lodi.
Clients come from far and wide to the shop, which has a dedicated mother-of-the-bride and mother-of-the-groom section upstairs, as well as another part catering for the curvy girl. Nessa (the owner) does occasion and casual wear and has something for every budget and every size!
Now this dress is still there in a few sizes and is down to €90 in the sale; definitely a bargain.
Are you a sequin lover? Do you like to sparkle?

I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year. It is the time for us to reflect on what has passed and for some of us to be thankful for all the blessings and good fortune we have had. For others who have had a difficult year, I hope that 2019 is good to us all and that we are given the strength to deal with whatever life throws at us.
Remember as Helen Keller said ‘ Your success and happiness lies within you.’
And another one I love:
” We can’t control the world. We can only (barely) control our own reactions to it. Happiness is largely a choice not a right or entitlement.”
I love to sparkle!! And that dress is so unique with the asymmetrical hem!!
Happy New Year Hilda!!!

Thank you so much Jess, I did not buy it though I was tempted. I need to spend less….and I need more wardrobe space.
Happy New Year dear Hilda!
Hilda, this dress is absolutely stunning! I am a huge fan of all things that glitter and sparkle although I don’t think I have much in the way of sequins either. Although I did just get the most amazing pair of floral booties all covered in sequins that I wore for my NYE outfit post! Wishing you all the best in 2019! Happy New Year!

Thanks Emma and I hope 2019 is wonderful for you. x
I’m so surprised that you don’t own more sequins as I too see as such a sparkly type. Anyway, Emma did you a favour by forcing you to look for a new sequinned outfit. This dress is sparkly and yet not too Christmassy if you get what I mean. And I love those shoes – they’re terribly chic!
Happy New Year to you my dear. I’m so grateful that the blogsphere has brought us together.
