The newly revamped Morgan Hotel in the heart of Dublin is more than just the ideal location for exploring Dublin. It is the perfect hotel for a get-away with your loved one. With Valentine’s Day coming up, it might just be the perfect present. You know what I am talking about: cocktails in The Morgan, a choice of wonderful restaurants nearby, a beautiful room with a comfy bed and really friendly staff.
It is very rare for GG and me to spend an overnight in a Dublin City Centre hotel. However, the opportunity arose when I won a prize of a night in this recently renovated boutique hotel on Fleet Street.
We had been at the re-launch some weeks earlier when we learned that they invested €15 million in re-developing the hotel, which had been closed for 7 months for the work to be completed, and that included the addition of a fifth floor for additional bedrooms.
Location
It has to be one of the most central hotels in the capital, right in the heart of Temple Bar, less than 5 minutes’ walk to Grafton Street and the same to O’Connell Street; well, at my pace…it can be a little longer walking with GG, who prefers to amble! It is so handy for landmarks like the Spire, The Custom House, The National Gallery, St Stephen’s Green and my old alma mater Trinity College (below).
Of course, you are spoiled for restaurants and I particularly like La Vicoletto, but on that particular occasion we went to another old favourite Trocadero, both only a few minutes’ walk from the hotel.
And if you want to sample some of Temple Bar’s famous pubs then you are a stone’s throw away. GG and I preferred to have one of the amazing cocktails in the new Fleet Street Bar (below) at The Morgan which sports a team of expert ‘mixologists’.
Décor
I love the reception area which allows plenty of natural light via the large windows which look out on the street. And as you move from there to the lifts, there is a lobby area which effectively uses mirrors and minimalist furniture to give a sophisticated yet modern vibe.
Bedrooms
We stayed in a newly renovated room at the back of the hotel on the 4th floor. I was pleasantly surprised by the fact that there was absolutely no noise, despite being on the edge of the always lively Temple Bar! We slept like babies on the comfiest of beds in a contemporary, modern style bedroom. You really do notice the difference when a hotel splurges on top quality beds and bedding.
Fluffy white robes, beautiful Handmade Soap Company toiletries, an umbrella for the unpredictable Irish weather, free high-speed wifi, ironing board and iron, flatscreen TV and a mini-bar…all you would expect from a 4-star hotel. But the Nespresso was an added luxury. None of your little sachets of instant coffee here.
Similarly, the bathroom had equally clean lines and Graham was very impressed with the power shower.
If you want to really splurge you can go for the likes of the Aston Suite (below).
Food
It was only when we came down for breakfast that we realised that the hotel was quite full and we chatted to an Icelandic couple who raved about the place. We had a very pleasant buffet brekkie, before we set out to indulge in a little retail therapy and I had a blow-dry in Crow Street Collective before returning to The Morgan for their signature Afternoon Tea.
Luckily, I had Graham with me, because I would never have got through my share on my own. It was delicious. You need to book at least a day in advance, so be warned. You can’t just rock up! We did have a glass of prosecco, too!
Staff
A hotel is nothing without its staff and the staff here are exceptional. Not one passed you by without a greeting or pleasantry and the reception team are all particularly welcoming and charming.
We had a most pleasant stay in The Morgan pre-Christmas. So, if you fancy a night or more in Dublin, I can without reservation recommend The Morgan Hotel!
This hotel looks stunning. My husband and I are planning a trip to Dublin again in next Fall. We will give this consideration.
