Golf break at Tulfarris Hotel, Wicklow Ireland

Golf with my friends has kept me sane during these turbulent times. I play regularly in my club at Malahide in Dublin. Though I took up the game in my late 50s, I can play to a level where I enjoy it without getting too frustrated now. I wrote about my initial struggles in a previous post.

Graham and I enjoyed a night in Tulfarris recently with some friends and highly recommend it. We were lucky that the weather was exceptional too. We headed out of Dublin early; Tulfarris is only an hour from us in Malahide. As you can see (below), the hotel frontage is rather unassuming but a pleasant, airy reception is reached by following the path through the trees.

GOLF

Booking in was left until after our golf so we headed straight to the adjacent golf club and paid €20 for our buggy. The course is quite long and as Graham is pretty new to golf, he finds it quite tiring (well, mentally anyway!). But he can still run around a tennis court with his new hip. Anyway, we spend quite a lot of time searching for his golf balls in the trees…he will probably kill me for writing that!

The course is beautifully kept and it is easy to be distracted by the lovely views over the Blessington Lakes against the backdrop of the Wicklow Mountains. I always have an excuse for my bad golf.

HOTEL

Our rooms were perfect and the hotel has been refurbished since we were last there, probably ten years ago.  You will have to be content of a pic of me wearing an old Coast jumpsuit and standing by the window. But you can see pictures if you check out their website.

The restaurant was reconfigured because of Covoid regulations and perspex screens divided the diners. In fact we were certainly two metres away from anyone else. We felt perfectly safe. All of the staff wore masks.

FOOD

Our dinner that evening was exceptional. This was a pleasant surprise as it was not normal hotel fare in any way. I forgot to take any photos, much to my hubby’s delight…he hates waiting for his food and I can be a little slow trying to get the best pics. But I had a goat’s cheese starter and a hake main course that were both delicious to eat and a feast for the eyes.

Breakfast was served to the table by a very attentive young man called Ronan. And my smashed avocado with poached eggs on sourdough was excellent. I managed to resist the pastries and other goodies that we were offered. Graham indulged. He has a sweet tooth.

OVERVIEW

We took a little walk around before we left. The Resort also has a number of cottages to rent and various activities are offered on site, such as archery and canoeing.

We also wandered by The Manor House which dates back to the 18th century and is used for weddings, conferences and parties. We saw a small wedding there as we were bopping around between holes.

I can highly recommend this hotel. If you want a golf break, it is top notch. If you are a walker, you will be spoiled for choice nearby. And the mountains and Glendalough are minutes away.

We paid €224 for our golf, our dinner, bed and breakfast. What is not to like?

Absolutely beautiful! My son plays a lot of golf and I he visited Ireland about 12 years ago. He would absolutely love it there. I don’t play golf, but of course, I would go to experience everything else.
