A press drop of iconic Maybelline mascaras brightened up a blustery day in March. It is 50 years since the launch of Maybelline’s iconic Great Lash mascara.
I am always on the hunt for an incredible mascara. This is particularly difficult the older I get as the lashes become more brittle. Well everything does, I guess. Moan!
I probably have bought every brand of mascara at this stage. I even wrote about mascaras in an early blog post way back in 2016 and guess what, Maybelline was my favourite then.
WHAT WE NEED FROM MASCARAS
- Moisturising
- Non-clumpy
- Lengthening
- Thickening
- Easy to remove
SIMPLE HISTORY LESSON ON MASCARAS
Did you know that a young girl, Mabel Williams, made home-made mascara with coal dust and Vaseline?
Her entrepreneurial brother realised its potential and together they launched a cake mascara and named it Maybelline, a combination of Mabel and Vaseline.
The brand, as we know it today, with the product already applied to a spiral brush in a tube, was launched in 1959.
MAYBELLINE GREAT LASH
But in 1971, the much-loved Great Lash, housed in its iconic pink and green packaging, made its debut.
Its water-based formula that conditioned while it thickened lashes made it a game-changer. It soon became a global best-seller and by the year 2000, one was sold every 1.2 seconds. That is a lot of mascara!
I had not tried this before and I must say I am very impressed with it. It is non-clumpy, but it is lengthening and thickening. You probably need to apply two coats of this to get the same effect as the other Maybelline mascaras below.
I can only think I found the neon colours of the tube off-putting for some reason. But I would certainly buy it again. I also find the wand the easiest to use. In other words, I don’t poke myself in the eye! It gives a natural but enhanced look to the lashes. It is priced at €7 50 in Boots.
MAYBELLINE LASH SENSATIONAL
This was launched in 2015 and is hugely popular. I have bought it before and like it.
But the wand does get a bit clumpy as you can see. And I did manage to poke myself in the eye with it! The result is dramatic and the mascara removes easily. Price is €12 99.
MAYBELLINE FALSIES LASH LIFT
This was soon out-performed by Falsies Lash when it was introduced in 2020. It was an instant hit and you can see why from the photo below. With only one coat, it makes an impressive difference. With two I imagine you could flirt to your heart’s content. Also €12 99 in Boots.
MAYBELLINE COLOSSAL MASCARA
Now this one significantly adds volume in one coat. And its formula is collagen-infused. Mention collagen and I am hooked.
Instantly recognisable with its bright yellow packaging, this delivers non-clumpy instant volume and lengthens too. Priced at €10 99 which makes it incredible value.
FINAL THOUGHTS
- Photos are of one coat of mascara. You can see the differences in the photos. So it all depends on the impact you want.
- I need to get something done with my eyebrows! (another post needed).
- The mascaras were easy to remove (Great Lash a little more difficult) But no lashes were broken or lost in the experiment.
- All delivered what they said on the tube.
- Prices are very reasonable.
- My least favourite was the most popular…the Lash Sensational only because I found the wand awkward.
- My favourite is the Great Lash, closely followed by The Collossal.
- But truly, I would happily purchase any of them again.
Maybelline Mascaras are popular with good reason.
I LOVED THIS!
I use the GREAT LASH but seldom …………
I find it so FUNNY you have the same products WE DO IN THE STATES!

I had researched mascaras for my original post in 2016. So yes Mr Google is wonderful. Share anything any time or use any bits you like. Loving your posts!
Hi Hilda! I find the brush is usually the problem, especially when the tube is new. That’s when it tends to clump more. I always have another brush to separate them before they dry. xoxox, Brenda
Now that is a clever idea. Thanks Brenda.
You and me both Hilda – I have been looking for a good mascara for years! I can’t believe Maybelline Great Lash is 50 years old! I haven’t tried their mascaras for a long time, so when I’ve finished my latest one I may give it a go!
Amazing the difference a mascara makes. x
I’ve long been a fan of Maybelline’s Colossal Mascara, I love the ones that have really big brushes!
Have a great weekend!
