WHAT IS RETINOL?
HOW DOES RETINOL WORK?
Retinol is a “gold standard” ingredient in dermatology due to its proven effectiveness in addressing a wide range of skin concerns
Retinol works by penetrating the outer layer of the skin (epidermis) and reaching the middle layer (dermis). Once there, it helps to neutralize free radicals and promotes the production of collagen and elastin, two key proteins that give skin its structure, firmness, and elasticity.
It increases the rate of skin cell turnover. So, it encourages the shedding of old, dead skin cells and the growth of new, healthy cells. This process helps to unclog pores, exfoliate the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve skin tone and reduce pigmentation.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
Most brands recommend starting with a low concentration and to use only twice a week so your skin can get used to the product. It is important to use it at night on clean skin, followed by a suitable night cream if you are new to retinols. And it is essential that a broad spectrum sun screen with an SPF of 30 or more is used, as it does make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
People with sensitive skin might find that they have initial side-effects such as redness, dryness, flaking or irritation, especially as the skin adjusts.
Results will take time. As we all know, there is no such thing as a quick fix.
MY FAVOURITE BRANDS
As I said, I have used retinols on and off over the past few years. When I use them religiously I do see results. In fact, I notice the difference if I stop using retinols for any length of time. My skin loses its clarity, it becomes dull and then the lines and wrinkles become more obvious. I also see an increase in pigmentation, which is the bane of my life even though I use SPF religiously.
If you are a retinol virgin I recommend you start with:
IMAGE AGELESS+

Launched earlier this year, Image Ageless+ is available in three different strengths: 0.1%, 0.3% and 0.75% to build skin strength and improve visible results over time.

ULTRACEUTICALS
Ultra A Skin Perfecting Serum

Another excellent brand is an Australian favourite called Ultraceuticals.
This has retinol and oil-soluble Vitamin C. It also contains exfoliating bromelain, an enzyme found in pineapple.
Their Vitamin A is best introduced slowly into your nightly regime and I found that I needed to use it followed by a moisturiser.
I used this a few years ago as part of a 90-day collaboration with the brand and you can see how much my skin had improved by the end. Check my review HERE
SKINGREDIENTS

I have only begun to use the brand new retinol from Skingredients, the famous SKIN NERD brand
This Retinol + B3 Anti-Ageing Night Serum is available in two strengths (0.6% + 1.0%)
Included are FOUR actives: Vitamin A (pure retinol), B3 (niacinamide), hyaluronic acid and humectants.
Like the other brands, this will stimulate collagen, reduce inflammation, boost the skin barrier and they also claim that there is less chance of irritation.
I am introducing this slowly and so far so good. The price is also reasonable and can be found on various online sites for as little as €44.
There are a myriad of different products out there at various price points. Have you have used retinol and did you find it effective?
